Generational Contract Broken: The Failure of Gen X and Millennials

Published October 30, 2025

Based on careful reflection and observing the interactions among Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha (who are already reaching crucial developmental stages), I assert that Gen X, in particular, and early Millennials have fundamentally failed the generations that follow. While I recognize this is a provocative opinion, I believe the evidence is compelling.

Growing up, our elders frequently recounted how the generation before them took on the mantle of responsibility, preparing them thoroughly for every stage of life. These positive narratives were widely confirmed across the community, suggesting the generation before them truly succeeded. However, the outcomes we observe today often contradict these stories, leading many to question the claimed positive experiences of our immediate predecessors.

The modern reality, driven by the generation before me and my own, is a glaring contradiction. Gen X and Millennials often brag about the responsible, supported upbringings they received, marked by dedicated parental involvement. Yet, today we present two debilitating extremes: parents who shirk their duties partially/entirely or those who are excessively overprotective, inadvertently crippling their children’s ability to develop necessary resilience. Both approaches constitute a failure to launch.

We must know the fact that, Gen Z and Alpha inherited this world without request. They know only the narratives we tell them of the past, narratives that seem unverified by the current behavior of their elders. It falls directly on the shoulders of the preceding generations to equip them, guide them, and help them differentiate the world they face today from the one we once knew.

It is critical that Gen X and Millennials accept accountability, rectify past errors, and chart a constructive course for the new generation. Rather than defaulting to blame and complaint, our mission must be to guide them toward a better understanding of the world. This requires positive modeling, integrating the valuable lessons from the past with the complexities of the present day.
