From Skeptic to Integrator: Teaching Students to Navigate the AI Future

Published October 30, 2025

Over the past 12 months, I've committed myself to a journey of upskilling and relearning in Artificial Intelligence within my academic field.

I've come to a clear realisation that AI is here to stay. Our only viable option is to adopt, adapt, and integrate it. Otherwise, we risk being left out and eventually left behind.

Initially, I was hesitant, fearing AI would erode my human capacity for creative thought. I've since learned the opposite is true; it's a powerful assistant that makes my work better and easier. AI isn't coming for your job. It's coming for the people who refuse to use it.

The real wake-up call came directly from my students. When some students whose work I was familiar with began submitting outstanding assignments that they couldn't intellectually defend, it signaled a serious problem: widespread, unaided use of AI.

At that junction, I immediately shifted my focus from simply understanding AI to creating pedagogical solutions. Instead of banning the tools, I started integrating AI into all my courses, teaching students how to use it effectively and responsibly.

As a teacher and facilitator of Academic Research and Writing, I've just created a new course: "Ethical AI Use in Academic Research and Thesis Writing." My intention is to meet students where they are and to proactively guide them through the ethics and practicalities of using AI in their most critical work.

How are you dealing with the integration of AI in your career?
